about

As the date of the double-bill gig in iBeam Brooklyn was approaching, I got increasingly excited, curious and a bit nervous. After all, it was (and remains) a rare occasion for me - to take a subway ride, stroll down the streets of Brooklyn, casually turn up in a designated venue, set up, enjoy some banter and then suddenly… be in the center of attention, performing music with some of the finest of what NYC has got to offer. These days there is a simple explanation - I live in Europe for over 30 years now, and don’t come over to USA to play that often. But try to imagine how I used to feel back in the 80s while living in New York - an ardent listener of so many great concerts, dreaming of one day to… (see the description above :)
So, when Max Johnson heard that I was coming over and offered to organise a concert at the fine venue iBeam, I jumped at the opportunity.

I was super happy to hear that the great saxophonist Michaël Attias agreed to play the first set. It was our first encounter, and it went swimmingly, and then some. Luckily, Randy Thaler, a great enthusiast of the music we play, came to record the gig, thus making the eventual CD release on Leo Records possible. We named that duo recording „Brooklyn Mischiefs“, one can check it out right here, on my Bandcamp site.

For the trio set to follow, Max and I asked one of the greatest drummers around - Gerald Cleaver. I already had a pleasure of making a recording with him, in trio with and under the name of the wonderful bassist Pascal Niggenkemper. And, needless to say, I was a big fan already, prior to that session. To our delight, Gerald was free and agreed to join us.

To play with another wonderful member of the NY music scene, Max Johnson, was yet another delight the evening had for me in store.

You are hearing now the results of this first-time-as-a-trio set. We really had great time, engaging in spontaneous groove collisions of ritualistic nature, lyrical episodes, followed by unexpected quasi-Salsa stretches, bombastic explosions of energy and sudden use of Monk’s tune at the end.

To quote Mr. Attias:
"Simon, the music is so beautiful—like monstrously beautiful —full and overflowing and standing on giant legs out from the surface of the earth and reaching to embrace all of the world and its wonders while its head pierces through the zodiac dome to peer at the stars and the silence beyond. I remembered the part where the Magic Whirling Dervishes from Planet X come to visit Gnawa-Gowanus— in fact that passage had grown legendary in my mind. Well, the actuality of the recording surpasses the memory, this is instant-legend with a seven-year delay, and that is all I have to say about it."

I really hope you enjoy it too.
